A Continuum of Freeing Design & Vigorous Futures, or the Continuum Deck, details an approach for designing for equitable & just outcomes in the present (the Freeing Design Deck) and an approach for designing for thriving worlds in the future (the Vigorous Futures Deck). It’s been made to provide design-centricity to the experiences of the intersectional and the marginalized in our world — be they of Black, Indigenous, Brown, Latinx/a/o, Asian, LGBTQ2IA, People with Disabilities, and/or Working Class communities.

There are many ways that the deck can be used and/or played, even. Over the next couple of blog posts, I’ll be exploring some of those ways — today, the focus is on the two cardsets within Continuum Deck itself. The next post will examine ways in which Continuum Deck can be used in conjunction with the Beautiful Trouble Strategy Card Deck.

In the meantime, let’s explore just some of the uses of the Continuum Deck:

Freeing Design Cardset

  • Holistic community design guidance for a project — use the Freeing Design Cardset to guide your community/equity/product design work from start to finish.
  • Reflective toolkit depending on scenario/need — a repository of emancipatory design methods across this design system. Choose what is utilized based on context and need.
  • Quick ideation session — utilize the Dream & Ideate cards to guide facilitation of inclusive and community centric creative experiences.

Vigorous Futures

  • Radical product exploration — push the possibilities of what a product or service offering could be through imagining what will be needed in potential futures.
  • World building & scenario planning — construct new worlds, intriguingly different from the real world, to posit how people, technology, health, culture, and society may look different, as well as the implications of various scenarios.
  • Strategic planning — help define an organizational vision/direction for the future, while identifying your organization’s goals and objectives

So there are just a few ways the Continuum Deck can be used. I’m curious though, folks, how have you been using the Continuum Deck?
